Visigoths held it, then Muslim governors, until Frankish armies took it in 801 and it became a border county of their empire. Dynastic union with Aragon in 1137 made it one of the Mediterranean's great trading ports, with shipyards and its own code of maritime law. Cotton, steam and the peninsula's first railway brought it back. Under Franco the public use of Catalan was restricted, and the 1992 Olympics opened the industrial waterfront and gave the city its beaches. Carry small notes anyway for market stalls, the granissat cart and the oldest bodegas, where the till is a drawer and the bill is chalked on the wooden counter.","Late spring and early autumn are the best weeks: warm, bright, cool enough to walk all day. August is humid and heavy and many neighbourhood places close, with one exception — the week around 15 August, when Gràcia's streets compete over their decorations. Winter is mild and half empty.
