The seasons invert: September to April in the north, March to September in the south.\n\nThree things decide whether you see it: darkness, clear sky and geomagnetic activity. You clip a harness lanyard to the cable and walk. If you slip you fall to the next anchor, not to the valley. It gives someone with no climbing skill a day in terrain that would otherwise need a rope, a partner and years of practice. The Alps call these routes *via ferrata* — iron road — and the name travelled with them, but the idea is older and wider than the word.\n\nTwo families built them, for reasons that had nothing to do with sport. Italian and Austrian troops fixed cables and ladders across the Dolomites during the First World War, to move men through vertical rock. Some of what you climb today is that same infrastructure, with tunnels and gun positions still in the cliff. On the other side of the world, Taoist pilgrims bolted planks to the granite of Huashan because a temple sat at the far end; the chains are old, the harness is a recent addition. Modern routes are built purely because the wall is there — cable bridges, overhanging ladders, a staircase hanging in free air between two towers.\n\nWhat varies from route to route is not technique but exposure: how far the drop is beneath your boots, and how long it stays there. Grading systems disagree by country (Italian 1–5, Austrian A–F), so the honest measure is vertical metres and how much of it overhangs. A helmet, a harness and a ferrata set with a shock absorber are not optional — the fall forces on a fixed cable are high enough that an ordinary sling can kill you. That is why the same regions keep appearing — volcanic soil in Rotorua and the granite and schist of the Alps, both of which drain instead of turning to mud. Moab is the one exception: its slickrock is superb dry and unrideable wet, so desert rain shuts it for a day or two.\n\nGrades travel badly between countries, so treat the local green–blue–black scale as advice, not a promise. A blue in Whistler is a black in most European bike parks. There is no light, no moisture in the air, and no sound at all — the silence in a dune field is the kind people describe afterwards as physical.\n\nThe deserts below differ in colour and grain more than in experience. Erg Chebbi is orange and steep, and Wadi Rum is red sandstone with granite towers standing in it. The Thar is pale and studded with villages. The Gobi is cold and grey, and ridden on two-humped Bactrian camels instead of dromedaries. Getting to a genuinely dark site is the rare case where a few hours of driving buys you something that no amount of money can buy at home.\n\nThere are three different things to look at, and they run on different calendars. The Milky Way core — the bright, structured part towards Sagittarius — is above the horizon from roughly March to October, and it stands highest and brightest from the southern hemisphere. Meteor showers are fixed dates: the Perseids around 12 August, the Geminids around 14 December, the Quadrantids on 3–4 January, and the Eta Aquariids in early May, which the southern hemisphere sees far better. And then there is simply darkness — the moonless sky itself, where you can see your own shadow cast by starlight.\n\nThe one variable people forget is the moon. A full moon ruins a dark site as thoroughly as a city does, so check the lunar calendar before booking anything: you want the week around new moon. After that it is altitude and dryness, which is why observatories cluster in deserts and on high islands. Once a year, on a handful of nights, entire reefs release their eggs and sperm within an hour of each other — millions of colonies, thousands of square kilometres, synchronised. The water fills with pink and orange bundles rising like a snowfall going the wrong way, and by morning it is over.\n\nThe trigger is a combination of sea temperature, day length and the lunar cycle. Most reefs go a few nights after a specific full moon, usually between one and four hours after sunset, and local scientists get better at predicting it every year without ever getting it exactly right. It was only described scientifically in 1981, on the Great Barrier Reef — before that nobody knew reefs did this.\n\nYou dive it at night, which means torches, and the torches are part of the problem: too much light and you are looking at plankton instead of coral. A good operator dives with red or dimmed lights and knows which colonies on their site go first. Expect one to three attempts. It grows up to 60 cm a day, which makes it one of the fastest-growing organisms on Earth. A mature stand reaches 45 m from seabed to surface. Swimming into one is genuinely like entering a forest: shafts of green light, a canopy overhead moving with the swell, and things living at every level of it.\n\nKelp only grows in cold, nutrient-rich, well-lit water, which is why it belts the temperate coasts and skips the tropics entirely. That cold is the price of admission — most of the places below need a thick wetsuit or a drysuit, and the visibility is decided by the swell. On a good day you see 15 m; after a storm you see your own hand.\n\nThere is an honest note attached to this one. Kelp forests are in trouble in several of these places: Tasmania has lost more than 90% of its giant kelp to warming currents, and stretches of northern California collapsed after a sea urchin explosion in the 2010s. When a thin film of water sits on a perfectly flat salt crust, it becomes a mirror: no waves, no depth, no horizon. Salar de Uyuni is the largest and flattest surface on Earth — 10,500 km² varying by less than a metre — and after rain the sky lands on it completely. Satellite teams use it to calibrate instruments for exactly that reason.\n\nSo one heading covers two very different days out, and which one you get is a question of season and lake. Some are floats, some are mirrors, a few are both at different times of year. In those places the geography traps warm wet air against cold air night after night, and the sky discharges hundreds of times an hour, most of the year.\n\nThe best of them is Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela, where the Catatumbo river meets the lake. Warm air off the water hits cold air spilling down from the Andes, and the collision produces storms on roughly 260 nights a year, sometimes for nine hours at a stretch with 28 flashes a minute. Sailors used it as a lighthouse. Most of the strikes are cloud-to-cloud, which is why you can watch it from a distance in relative safety.\n\nWhat makes this worth travelling for rather than watching from a window at home is the near-certainty. You are not waiting for a storm — you are booking a place where the storm is a nightly institution. The rules that come with it are simple and non-negotiable: watch from indoors, from a boat cabin, or from a vehicle, never from open water or a ridge, and treat every \"safe distance\" claim with suspicion. The Bernina crosses a 2,253 m pass with no rack and no cable — just a gradient held at 7% and curves tight enough that the train sees its own tail.\n\nWhat a train gives you that nothing else does is a continuous view at a speed you can read. You are not driving, so you look out of the window for four hours instead of at the road. The line was surveyed for gradient rather than for a destination, so it goes through the valleys rather than over them. In most of these places the railway arrived before the road, and the villages along it are still shaped around the station.\n\nAlmost all of them run year-round and can be ridden as an ordinary ticketed service rather than a tourist product — which is usually cheaper, less crowded and better. Where a \"panoramic\" version exists it means bigger windows and reserved seats, not a different route.
