You run off a slope and stop running. There is no engine, so how long you stay up is decided by the terrain and the time of day — thermals coming off sun-warmed rock, or a sea breeze pushing steadily up a ridge.\n\nAlmost anywhere with a hill and a landing field will do for a flight. What separates the sites below is reliability: a launch that faces the prevailing wind, a landing you can see from the air, and air that behaves. That combination is rare enough that the same dozen places appear on every pilot's list, and every one of them will also take a complete beginner up on a tandem with an instructor doing the flying.\n\nYou do not need a licence, a course or any fitness to do this. What you do need is patience with weather — good sites cancel often, and a school that flies you in bad air is a school to walk away from.
