One is descending: a lift or a shuttle takes you to the top and you spend the day going down. The trails are built and maintained like ski runs, with jumps, berms and a grading system borrowed from skiing. The other is riding a mountain: you climb what you descend, and the reward is remoteness rather than airtime.\n\nThe trails below cover both. What makes a place worth travelling for is not one famous run but density: a network deep enough that you ride for a week without repeating, built on dirt that drains. That is why the same regions keep appearing — volcanic soil in Rotorua and the granite and schist of the Alps, both of which drain instead of turning to mud. Moab is the one exception: its slickrock is superb dry and unrideable wet, so desert rain shuts it for a day or two.\n\nGrades travel badly between countries, so treat the local green–blue–black scale as advice, not a promise. A blue in Whistler is a black in most European bike parks.
