That is the whole reason this is worth travelling for: the sky has not changed, the ground under it has. Getting to a genuinely dark site is the rare case where a few hours of driving buys you something that no amount of money can buy at home.\n\nThere are three different things to look at, and they run on different calendars. The Milky Way core — the bright, structured part towards Sagittarius — is above the horizon from roughly March to October, and it stands highest and brightest from the southern hemisphere. Meteor showers are fixed dates: the Perseids around 12 August, the Geminids around 14 December, the Quadrantids on 3–4 January, and the Eta Aquariids in early May, which the southern hemisphere sees far better. And then there is simply darkness — the moonless sky itself, where you can see your own shadow cast by starlight.\n\nThe one variable people forget is the moon. A full moon ruins a dark site as thoroughly as a city does, so check the lunar calendar before booking anything: you want the week around new moon. After that it is altitude and dryness, which is why observatories cluster in deserts and on high islands.
