Game drives roll across the grassland for elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and the lions, and the red-earth tracks into the remote north lead into open savanna and scattered lakes where hours pass without another vehicle.\n\nLake Ihema, the largest of the lakes, is crossed by boat, past one of the densest hippo populations in East Africa wallowing in the shallows, crocodiles on the banks and fish eagles in the trees, and the papyrus along the eastern lakes hides the bird that most people come for: the shoebill, a towering, prehistoric-looking swamp bird that stands motionless for long stretches and then lunges to seize a lungfish, or a young crocodile, from the channels. Akagera is one of the few parks in East Africa that runs guided night drives, sweeping the bush with a spotlight for leopard, hyena and the small cats, and the lodges are on the lakes and the ridges above them, two hours from Kigali.
