The ice begins at the Jungfraujoch, where a cog railway tunnels through the Eiger and the Mönch to the highest railway station in Europe, at 3,454 metres, and from the terraces there the glacier stretches away below like a white road with dark stripes down its middle, the moraines of the three ice streams that join to make it. From the other end, a cable car lifts you from Fiescheralp to the Eggishorn at 2,869 metres, the highest viewpoint in the region, and the whole glacier lies below at once, curving down its valley between the peaks with the Matterhorn on the horizon. A marked balcony path runs along the crest above the ice from the Bettmerhorn to the Hohfluh by way of Moosfluh, several hours with the glacier beside you the entire way.\n\nThe ice can be walked. With crampons and a mountain guide you step onto the glacier itself and pick a way between blue crevasses and the debris-streaked ridges of the upper ice, with meltwater running in channels across the surface in summer. Beside the glacier stands the Aletsch forest, where wind-bent Swiss stone pines up to a thousand years old take root on the raw rock the retreating ice leaves behind, colonising ground the glacier held not long ago. That retreat is the glacier's other story: it has lost more than three kilometres of length since 1850 and thins by metres every year, and markers on the rock walls show where the surface used to be. The villages on the ridge, Bettmeralp and Riederalp, are car-free and reached only by cable car, so the glacier is seen from balconies where cows graze.
