The mountain is across the border in Tanzania, but its water is here: rain and snowmelt off Kilimanjaro sink into the volcanic rock and surface in Amboseli as springs and swamps, green islands of papyrus in a plain of dust, and every animal in the park comes to them. Elephants in families of dozens cross the flats toward the swamps in the morning and wade in to their shoulders to feed, hippos and buffalo share the water, and from the swamp edges pelicans, fish eagles and grey-headed kingfishers work the reeds. The mountain shows itself most reliably at dawn and dusk, before the cloud builds, and with elephants in front of it.\n\nAmboseli's elephants may be the best-known wild elephants anywhere: they have been studied without a break since 1972, every animal named and every family tree recorded, so that the bull crossing the road has a name and a biography. The park is small, and the herds do not stay inside it; they walk out across Maasai land to the hills and back, and the Maasai, whose cattle graze the same ground and who have kept the elephants alive by tolerating them, run the conservancies around the park. Away from the swamps the open savanna holds zebra, wildebeest and gazelle with oxpeckers riding their backs, and the pale dust of the ancient lake bed at the park's heart blows into whirlwinds in the dry season and floods into a shallow lake in the rains.
