The ring holds Annapurna I, at 8,091 metres the first mountain over 8,000 metres that anyone climbed, in 1950, and beside it the fluted peak of Machapuchare, the fishtail, which no one is allowed to climb at all. The trail starts among rice terraces and rhododendron forest, where the trees burn red and pink in late March and April, and climbs through Gurung villages of slate-roofed stone houses stacked up the hillside. Ghandruk is the one people stop in: you eat dal bhat with Gurung families whose sons have filled the ranks of the Gurkha regiments for two centuries, and the mountains stand at the end of the village lane.\n\nAbove the forest the valley narrows to a gorge and then opens, and you are inside the ring. Base Camp is a glacial basin at 4,130 metres with an unbroken wall of ice and rock on every side, so close that the peaks fill the sky rather than the horizon. The Gurung call it the Sanctuary and hold the whole basin sacred; by tradition it was kept free of meat and eggs and, until recent decades, closed to women and outsiders. Arrive at midday and it is a view; sleep in the teahouses and it is something else. Before dawn, when the air is at its coldest, you step out onto the basin floor and watch the first light reach the top of Annapurna I and turn it red while everything below is still blue. From October, when the monsoon withdraws and takes the haze with it, the ring stands hard-edged from dawn to dusk.
