Nearby the Tasman Glacier, the longest in New Zealand, has melted back into a young lake dotted with icebergs, and boats go out among them. The moment to wait for is the last light: as the sun drops behind the range, the high snowfields flare pink and orange for a few short minutes while the valley floor has already fallen into cold shadow. Then the sky takes over. The Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve was the first in the Southern Hemisphere and carries a gold rating for its darkness, and on clear nights the Milky Way arches from ridge to ridge over the peak.
