The eruption of 1968 did not go up but sideways: the blast came out of the western flank, twelve years before Mount St Helens did the same thing, and wiped out three villages on that side of the cone; La Fortuna, the fortune, on the far side, was untouched, and a popular story says that is how it got its name. The lava stopped in 2010, and the volcano now sleeps with the occasional puff of steam, but the cone still fills the sky above the town, and the moment to see it is the cool hour after dawn, when the summit is usually bare before the day's cloud climbs up from the lowlands and covers it.\n\nWhat the eruptions left is the visit. The heat that fed them still warms the groundwater, and rivers on the flanks run hot enough to sink into: the hot springs around the foot of the cone range from a free stream by the road to landscaped pools in the forest, and soaking in them with the volcano above is the thing people come for. Park trails lead out onto the hardened lava of 1968, black rock now splitting open to ferns, young trees and basking lizards, with the cone straight ahead. Hanging bridges string across steep rainforest ravines, lifting you level with the treetops where the toucans, sloths and monkeys live. A long stepped path drops through dripping forest to the foot of La Fortuna Waterfall, a single ribbon of water falling about seventy metres off a dark cliff into a churning pool that you can swim in. Behind the volcano lies Lake Arenal, the largest in the country, with wind that draws windsurfers.
