The mirror window is best in September and October, when the snow is off the terrace, the dawn air is at its stillest, the wall takes its first fresh snow and the summer crowds have gone.\n\nFor a few weeks from late June the turf around the lake fills with alpine roses, a low rhododendron with rust-backed leaves that flowers deep pink, with gentians in the shorter grass, and the path carries on past the lake and up to the Faulhorn at 2,681 metres, an hour and a half further, where a stone inn has taken guests since 1830, long before any cable car reached these slopes. From mid-December the lake freezes and vanishes under snow, and the summer path is groomed as a winter trail, on which a sledge is dragged up past the buried lake to the Faulhorn and ridden fifteen kilometres back down to Grindelwald, one of the longest toboggan runs in Europe.
