Marked trails drop from the Bastei through the maze of sandstone to Rathen, a small spa village on the Elbe with no cars, reached by a passenger ferry across the river, passing between towering walls and quiet ravines that the crowds on the bridge never see, and the painters' route through the region is now a marked long-distance path, the Malerweg. Rock climbers have been on these towers since the nineteenth century under their own strict rules, without metal in the rock.
