Water seeps into cracks, freezes on some 200 nights a year, and pushes the rock apart a little at a time, leaving spires where harder layers protect the soft rock beneath; Thor's Hammer, the best-known single hoodoo in the park, is a block of harder stone balanced on a thin stalk. The same frost destroys them, and the rim erodes back one to four feet every hundred years, so the shapes are a passing arrangement. The Paiute who knew this country told of the Legend People, beings who behaved badly and were turned to stone by Coyote, and left standing here.\n\nThe amphitheatre faces east, and Sunrise Point is where the day starts: the first rays run down the spires while the hollows below still hold cold blue shadow, and for a few minutes the whole basin glows. From Sunset Point the Navajo Loop switchbacks steeply off the rim to the floor, passing through the slot called Wall Street, where the walls close in and Douglas firs grow straight up between them to reach the light; from the bottom the hoodoos are towers, not shapes. The rim trail links the viewpoints along the top with the whole amphitheatre below. At 2,400 metres the park holds snow through the winter, and the white on the orange spires is the other picture people come for. After dark the spires fade to silhouette and the sky takes over: this is one of the darkest places in the United States, and from May to September the core of the Milky Way arches straight over the amphitheatre.
