The walls above En-Vau are seamed with climbing routes on hard, sun-bleached limestone, since the Calanques are one of the cradles of French rock climbing, and one pair of Bonelli's eagles nests in the cliffs, with the routes near the nest closed in spring.\n\nBoats leave the old harbour of Cassis and run west along the coast, turning into one inlet after another for those who do not walk, and the kayaks go the same way at water level. Under the cliffs near Cap Morgiou lies the Cosquer cave, its entrance 37 metres below the sea, whose walls carry paintings of seals, auks and what look like jellyfish from the last ice age, when the cave was on dry land, sea creatures almost unknown in cave art anywhere else. The paths close on days of fire risk in high summer, and the sea is warmer in September and October than in June, with the crowds gone.
