The day walk is a steep climb of six to seven hours through southern beech forest and loose scree to the mirador, where the whole ring of towers, the hanging glacier beneath them and the lagoon at their foot stand in one view; the lagoon is fed by the glacier and the colour of it, and the towers are volcanic rock that stood while everything softer around it wore away. The four-day traverse starts at Las Horquetas and walks roughly 50 kilometres over passes, past hanging glaciers and remote mountain lagoons that the day-hikers never reach, camping in the valleys with the towers above. In autumn, around mid-April, the lenga forest along the Río Ibáñez turns deep red and gold beneath the rock.\n\nThe valleys are worked as well as walked. Patagonian stock riders still move cattle through them, and they take visitors along the lower trails on horseback, the way the country was crossed before the road came. Cerro Castillo holds one of the largest populations left of the huemul, the Andean deer that appears on Chile's coat of arms and numbers fewer than 1,500 in the wild; they are seen in ones and twos on the rocky slopes and in larger groups on the open valley floor, and a sighting is the reason many people come. Three kilometres from the village of Villa Cerro Castillo a tall rock face, the Paredón de las Manos, is stencilled with dozens of human hands, left by people who hunted these valleys thousands of years ago. The park is quieter than Torres del Paine, far to the south, with the same kind of rock and a fraction of the people.
