The Sentiero Azzurro, the blue trail, links the five along the cliffs, with the sea on one side and terraces on the other, in stretches of an hour or two between villages, and the seasonal ferry along the coast is the one way to see each village whole, from the water they were built to face.\n\nVernazza has the only true harbour of the five, a curve of water under a church and a tower where the evening is spent at the tables on the quay. The terraces are the coast's real monument, cut over a thousand years by hand and worked by the vineyards that make Sciacchetrà, a sweet wine from grapes dried on racks that is almost too hard to make, in tiny quantities from the steepest plots; their quiet abandonment, as the young left for the towns, is what made the flood of October 2011 so bad, when the unheld hillsides came down and buried Vernazza and Monterosso in mud. The villages are a national park now, and the trails are closed and mended after storms.
