Comino is almost empty, three square kilometres of bare garrigue with a handful of residents, a hotel and a watchtower, and the lagoon on its western side is a few hundred metres across; the crossing to Cominotto is short, with the pale floor visible the whole way so that light keeps coming up from below, and the rocks on the far side are jumped from at heights to choose. A short walk up the bare hillside reaches Saint Mary's Tower, built by the Knights in 1618 against corsairs, which played the Château d'If, the prison of Edmond Dantès, in the 2002 Count of Monte Cristo, and a boat round the headland reaches the Crystal Lagoon, a cove walled in by sheer cliffs where the swim starts straight off the boat because there is nowhere to stand, and the sea caves beyond it.\n\nThe island is a bird sanctuary where hunting is banned year-round, and the shearwaters nesting in its cliffs will not approach their burrows in daylight, since the gulls would take them, so they wait offshore and come in after dark, calling. In May and June wild thyme flushes the garrigue purple, the plant behind Maltese honey. One of the strangest chapters of Jewish mysticism was written here in 1288 by Abraham Abulafia, exiled to the island after trying to convert the Pope. The channel heats faster than the open sea, bath-warm by late August and still 23 degrees in October, when the day boats thin out and the lagoon is quiet again.
