The spit was forest until the timber was cut in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the freed sand began to march across it at several metres a year until the planting of pines from 1825 held it; the descendants of those seedlings stand out as single pines on the bare sand, and north of Pervalka the Dead Dunes roll away grey under a brittle crust of lichen and moss above the buried villages, walked on a boardwalk to the crest. At Nida the Parnidis dune rises fifty metres over the lagoon, and one person sliding down a slope moves tons of sand, which is why the ropes are there.\n\nThe two shores are different waters. The Baltic side is a beach of pale sand running the whole length of the spit, cold even in August, and the lagoon side a few hundred metres away is shallow, near-fresh from the Nemunas river and warm by late summer, with fishing villages along it. At Juodkrantė a viewing deck looks over some 3,000 pairs of great cormorants and a few hundred grey herons nesting in the pines, in full noise from late March, and the spit works as a funnel on the flyway, with flocks of finches and thrushes streaming low along the ridge in September and October; bird ringing was invented here in 1901. Thomas Mann built a wooden cottage above the lagoon at Nida in 1930 and spent three summers writing in it.
