Armenians call the town of Dilijan their Switzerland, and the forest is why: the slopes are green to the ridges, springs run in every gully, and in autumn the whole park burns copper and gold above the monasteries. Haghartsin is the one in the trees, a tenth-to-thirteenth-century monastery of grey domes rising just above the treetops where the forest climbs the slope behind it, with a refectory of stone arches and a walnut tree said to be as old as the church. Goshavank, on the other side of the park, takes its name from Mkhitar Gosh, a twelfth-century scholar who founded it and wrote Armenia's first law code, and at its Saint Gregory church stands a khachkar, a carved cross-stone, worked so finely that Armenians call it the needle-carved.\n\nThe park is walked on the Transcaucasian Trail, whose stretch here runs about twenty kilometres from Dilijan town up over the ridge to Parz Lake, a small green lake in the forest, then down through woods and hayfields to Goshavank, a long day or an easy two; above the treeline the forest gives way to rolling pastures folded between the soft peaks of the Lesser Caucasus, crowded with wildflowers by early summer. Dilijan's spring water is famous across the former Soviet Union because of a single line in a 1977 comedy film, in which a local insists it is the second-best water in the world, after New York's, and the joke has never left; the mineral water is bottled and sold everywhere. The town itself is a spa resort of wooden balconies and old stone streets that the Soviet elite used for their holidays.
