The name means dragon mountains, and from the meadows of the Royal Natal valley the wall does look like something's back, flat-topped and straight, with the falls a white thread down its face after rain. The valley is where most people start: an easy path up the Tugela Gorge that stops being a path in the last stretch, boulder-hopping up the riverbed and crossing a cable bridge that sways under you, into the spray at the foot of the falls. The other way is the top. Overhead the bearded vulture, a huge raptor that lives almost entirely on bone, holds one of its last strongholds on the cliffs.
