The park's centre is the Black Lake, Crno jezero, two connected pools of dark green water at the foot of the peak Međed, ringed by old spruce and beech, a short walk from the town of Žabljak; a level loop of 3.5 kilometres follows the shore, and wooden rowboats go out onto the still water, where the peaks and the forest hang upside down. From the alpine pastures above the lake the trails climb to the sharp ridgeline, and Bobotov Kuk, the highest summit at 2,523 metres, is a long day up scree to a view of rows of limestone peaks. Žabljak, at 1,450 metres, is the highest town in the Balkans, and in winter deep snow settles over the massif and the town becomes a ski resort.\n\nThe canyon is the other half. The Tara river runs cold and clear through walls that rise to 1,300 metres, and inflatable rafts ride it for a day or three, dropping through white rapids and gliding past springs and waterfalls that spill straight from the cliffs overhead, under the Đurđevića Tara bridge, a graceful arch of five spans built in 1940; in 1942 one of the engineers who built it helped partisans blow up a span to stop an occupying army from crossing, and was executed for it. In a guarded pocket of the canyon called Crna Poda stands one of Europe's last virgin forests of black pine, trees four hundred years old, and high on the massif's slopes an ice cave keeps columns and curtains of ice right through the summer. In summer the high meadows fill with wildflowers.
