The name was given by German climbers in the 1930s, and the meadow is the base for the mountain's Rakhiot face; every hut, camp and horse on the grass belongs to Tato, the Shina-speaking village down at the head of the jeep track, and the villagers run the meadow as their summer pasture and their business. Getting there is the famous part: a jeep track from the Karakoram Highway, cut into a cliff above the Indus and often called the most dangerous road in the world, climbs to Tato in an hour, and from the village a walk of two or three hours up through forest reaches the grass, where wooden cabins and tents face the mountain.\n\nThe mountain does the rest. The great peak that towers over the meadow and looks like the top of Nanga Parbat is often a decoy, the 7,816-metre North Peak, with the true summit behind it, and at first light the whole wall turns orange while the meadow is still in shadow.
