The silhouette is on the Patagonia clothing logo, and from the village it is the end of every street. The classic walk climbs to Laguna de los Tres: roughly an hour out of town the trees open at a viewpoint and the tower stands clear for the first time, then the trail runs up the valley through beech forest to a final steep hour of switchbacks, and at the top a turquoise lake lies directly under the peak with a glacier hanging above it and Fitz Roy's granite filling the sky. On a clear dawn the face goes red before anything else in the valley has light.\n\nThe second walk is gentler, following the Río Fitz Roy up to Laguna Torre, a glacial lake with icebergs beneath Cerro Torre, Fitz Roy's slender neighbour, a spike of granite topped with rime ice that is wrapped in mountaineering's bitterest argument over who truly reached its summit first. A less-trodden ridge trail up Loma del Pliegue Tumbado pulls back from the peaks to show the whole massif at once, Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre together with glaciers and lakes below, and in April the lenga forest under them turns copper and red. The mountain was named in 1877 for Robert FitzRoy, who captained the Beagle on Darwin's voyage and charted this coast. El Chaltén did not exist until 1985, when Argentina raised it in a hurry to stake a claim in a border dispute with Chile, and it has since become the trekking capital of the country, a village of hostels and bakeries with no bank and the wind in every street.
