A helicopter lifts you over the icefall and lands on the upper glacier, where guides in crampons lead a walk of a few hours among the crevasses, pinnacles and meltwater channels of the surface, and deep in the ice meltwater carves tunnels and caves where the compressed ice glows an electric blue, entered when they are stable; for a harder day, ice-climbing guides put axes in your hands for a sheer face of blue ice.
