The columns are cooled lava, split into regular prisms as it shrank, and here they do not stand upright but lean, bend and fan out across the cliff face in curves, so that one wall looks combed and another like organ pipes swinging down toward the river. A steep path drops from the road to the gorge floor, and you walk right up to the base of the columns, with the Azat running past and the wall going up a hundred metres above. From April into June, fed by snowmelt off the Geghama mountains, the river brims and roars past the foot of the columns, and in autumn the oak slopes above turn gold and the low light throws every flute of the stone into relief.\n\nOn the promontory above the gorge stands the Temple of Garni, a colonnaded Greek-style temple raised in the first century AD for Mihr, the sun god, and later used by Armenia's kings as a cool summer retreat; it is the only Greco-Roman temple left standing in the former Soviet Union, rebuilt from its own fallen stones in the 1970s after an earthquake flattened it in 1679, and it stands directly over the columns with the gorge falling away beneath its steps. Down on the gorge floor a single-arched stone bridge from the eleventh century still crosses the Azat, carrying the path toward the far bank. Beyond the rim, dry grassland rolls across the Kotayk plateau to the mountains. The temple and the gorge are usually seen together with the monastery of Geghard, cut into the cliff a few kilometres up the valley.
