A raised bog takes no water from the ground below, since its dome sits above the water table and lives on rain alone, which is why so little grows here and why the pines stay dwarfed, and the planks carry the walker over ground that would swallow a boot to the knee; the pools are dark with peat and mirror the sky, the tower lifts the eye above the pines to count them running to the horizon, and beside the boards in the wet moss grow the sundews, rosettes the size of a coin, red-haired and glistening, that catch and digest insects. The heavy resinous scent along the planks is wild rosemary, which in quantity can leave the walker light-headed.\n\nThe bog's sulphur water turned Ķemeri into one of the fashionable spa towns of the Russian Empire.
