The picture is from the water. A small ferry meets each train at the station across the lake and crosses to the village in about ten minutes, and from the deck the whole of Hallstatt lines up: the pastel houses stacked up the slope, the slender spire of the Evangelical church on the waterfront, the Catholic church higher up, and the mountain wall behind. That view has been photographed so often that a Chinese company built a full-size copy of the village in southern China. Behind the waterfront the lanes climb the cliff barely wide enough for two, past window boxes and the Mühlbach stream tumbling down through the houses.\n\nThe salt made the town. A steep funicular climbs to the mine, worked for some 7,000 years, where wooden slides carry you between the galleries and a lake of brine lies underground; in 1734 the workings gave up the preserved body of a miner, his skin, hair, clothing and shoes kept intact by the salt. Above the village a vast prehistoric cemetery was dug up in the nineteenth century, so rich in grave goods that archaeologists named an entire age of European prehistory, the early Iron Age, the Hallstatt period. Up the stone steps beside the Catholic church, a small room called the Beinhaus holds row upon row of skulls, more than a thousand, most inscribed with a name and painted with a wreath of flowers; the graveyard was too small for the dead to stay in it, so the bones were dug up, cleaned and decorated, and you can date each skull by its flowers, dark ivy for the 1700s, roses and lilies for the 1800s.
