The boulders were not piled here by any flood but are the granite rotting from the inside, weathered along its cracks into rounded blocks the size of houses that balance on one another across the valley, and the city was built among and out of them; the finest stonework is at the Vittala temple, where a stone chariot, a shrine to Garuda mounted on granite wheels, faces a hall whose slender columns were cut to ring at different pitches when struck. The Virupaksha temple on the river is still working rather than performing, with drums, bells and incense at the dawn puja under a nine-tiered gopuram, and the royal centre a few kilometres away is a different Hampi, open ground, stepped tanks, the Lotus Mahal and eleven domed chambers built to house the state elephants, their arches borrowed from the Deccan sultanates the empire fought.\n\nMatanga hill above the old bazaar is climbed in half an hour to a small shrine on the summit for the last light over the boulders and the river, and the round coracles that ferry people across the Tungabhadra spin as they go, with the temples rising from water level as they did for the empire's pilgrims. The macaques are no coincidence in local eyes, since this stretch of the river is identified with Kishkindha, the monkey kingdom of the Ramayana, where Hanuman was born.
