A narrow ledge cut into the canyon wall traces the cliff for a few kilometres from the hamlet of Al Khitaym to As Sab, a village abandoned decades ago, sheltered beneath a huge rock overhang with a spring pool above and terraces below, where about fifteen families once farmed; the path is flat, the drop is constant, and the abandoned houses at the end are walked into. Camping on the plateau at the edge of the drop, after the day-trippers leave, gives the first dawn in Oman and, on moonless summer nights, the Milky Way's core high overhead in some of the darkest skies in the country.
