The cave was found in 1836 by an American missionary who fired a shot into the dark to hear the echo, and it was explored over the next century along the river, which runs nine kilometres through the limestone before it emerges as the Dog river; the upper gallery, dry and higher, was opened in 1969 with a raised walkway that runs 750 metres into halls of stalactites and stalagmites, past pillars where a stalactite and the stalagmite beneath it have fused into a single column, to the White Chamber, and it holds a stalactite of 8.2 metres that is routinely called the longest in the world, a claim with an asterisk, since the measurement depends on what counts as a single drip. The lower gallery is reached by a stair and boarded from a landing: the boat glides 500 metres along the green river between walls of stone with the roof lost above the lights.\n\nGetting to the mouth is its own short journey, on a toy-sized train up through the gardens of the valley and a cable car for the last stretch to the upper entrance, with the sculptures of a park between. Cameras stay outside, since the cave's air is a balance of humidity and temperature that the crowds already disturb, and the ban keeps the visit moving; the lower gallery closes when the winter rains raise the river. The cave was a finalist for the new seven wonders of nature in 2011 and is the pride of a country with a great deal underground, since the limestone of Mount Lebanon is full of caves.
