The women are the haenyeo. Many of them grandmothers, they slip into the sea with only a mask, a float and a knife, work the bottom for about a minute at a time, and surface with abalone and urchins and a long whistling breath, the sumbisori, that carries across the water; they dive for up to seven hours a day, and their number is falling with every year. The island's shape is fire meeting sea. Seongsan, Sunrise Peak, is a cone of hardened ash that rose out of the water in violent steam blasts when magma met shallow seawater; a steep twenty-minute climb of wooden stairs reaches the rim of a wide grassy crater, and the island's day starts there before dawn.\n\nHallasan itself is climbed on two trails through changing forest to a shallow crater lake called Baengnokdam, the white deer lake, that fills the old vent at 1,950 metres. Under the island run lava tubes, and at Manjanggul a stairway drops into a tunnel left when the lava drained away, its ceiling arching up to 25 metres and its walls still rippled with frozen flow lines. At Cheonjiyeon a shaded path follows a wooded ravine to a waterfall that drops 22 metres into a deep green pool. The whole coast is walked on the Olle trails, 27 marked routes that ring the island, mostly hugging the shore, past black lava rock, fishing harbours and stone walls built without mortar. In spring the island turns yellow with canola flowers, brightest around Sunrise Peak, and in autumn silver grasses wave on the cones.
