The name means Seven Bulls, and the rock is conglomerate, the gravel and cobbles of ancient riverbeds cemented into stone and stained red by iron, split by vertical grooves into the separate humps; the legend has a khan who killed a stolen wife at a feast, her blood turning the rock red, and the seven bulls slaughtered for it turned to stone. The bluffs climb straight out of the green pasture, and walked to the base they are read close up, or from the slope facing them for the whole row at once; a second formation at the mouth of the gorge, the Broken Heart, is a red rock split in two, with its own story of two suitors. At the valley mouth a sanatorium opened in 1927 around hot springs unusually rich in radon, and Soviet cosmonauts were sent here to recover after flights.\n\nThe valley is the way in to the Terskey Ala-Too. Horses are taken across the meadows below the ridge, weaving between grazing herds and the yurts of the shepherds, and up the gorge along a clear stream in the shade of poplars and Tian Shan spruce as the valley narrows toward the higher meadows; the Kok-Jayik meadow, the Valley of Flowers, fills with colour in early summer, June and July, when the shepherds have raised their yurts and a waterfall drops off the slope above it. Walkers go on over the passes to the Ala-Kul lake and down to Altyn Arashan, a trek of three or four days between hot springs, with Karakol as the base.
