Kayaks are paddled out from the bay along the shore to coves the trails never reach, where sandstone rocks meet clear water and the snorkelling is over small reefs.\n\nThe glow is the island's night. The light comes from single-celled plankton called dinoflagellates, which flash blue-green for a split second whenever they are jostled by a wave, a fish or a hand, and on a dark night, away from the lamps of the guesthouses, a walk into the sea and a sweep of the arms sets off a spray of cold sparks around the body, brightest in the dry season when the water is calm and clear.
