The east face of the Watzmann, Germany's second-highest mountain, rises almost two thousand metres from the far shore in one of the biggest rock walls in the Alps, and local legend has the jagged skyline as a cruel king and his family turned to stone; the boats leave from Schönau at the north end, and halfway down the lake the boatman stops in the narrowest part, lifts a flugelhorn and plays into the cliff, which sends the notes back as an echo, a show that for generations was done with a small cannon fired from the boat. The landing is St. Bartholomä, a pilgrimage church of 1697 with three red onion domes on the Hirschau peninsula, where a mountain pilgrimage from Austria across the Steinernes Meer ended, and where in 1688 seventy pilgrims drowned when their boat sank in a storm.\n\nThe boat goes on to Salet at the south end, from which a few minutes' walk leads to the Obersee, a smaller lake mirrored between the cliffs, and at its far end the Röthbach waterfall, the highest in Germany at 470 metres, which roars on the snowmelt of May and June and thins to a thread by late summer. The shoreline is almost all cliff, so the only easy places to get in are the public shallows near the Schönau dock, where the water is cold even in August, and the trail from St. Bartholomä runs up to the Eiskapelle, a snow-and-ice cave at the foot of the Watzmann wall that survives most summers.
