The rock is the river's own work: the water carries dissolved limestone, and moss and plants pull it out and cement it into porous stone, so the lip of the falls thickens and shifts, and the same lime drips instead of spilling in a small grotto beside the cascades, hung with stalactites. In spring the horseshoe runs loudest, swollen with rain and snowmelt to four or five times its summer volume and thundering into the pool in a single sheet; by June the flow calms, the pool spreads out in cool green and turquoise below the falls, and the river becomes a swimming hole, with the spray drifting over the water and people floating under the cascades.\n\nThe way to see all twenty ribbons at once is to step back to where the horseshoe opens into its full semicircle, from the shore or from the water; small rowboats and kayaks go out onto the lower pool and paddle right up to the base of the falls, into the noise. The trees around the pool, poplars and figs, close it in, and the picnic tables and a café on the bank make it the summer afternoon of the region, busy with families from Mostar and Međugorje on hot days and quiet in the morning. Local telling says a cow once went over the edge here and survived the fall, and the waterfall has been Kravica, the little cow, ever since. The falls lie in the dry limestone country of Herzegovina, where rivers appear from the rock and vanish into it, and the Trebižat is one of the few that stays on the surface long enough to fall.
