Volcanic gas seeps into the lake from below and stays trapped under pressure in the deep water, enough that an upheaval could release it in a deadly cloud, as a smaller lake in Cameroon did in 1986; the same gas is now pumped out and burned for electricity at a plant on the Rwandan shore, and every cubic metre taken leaves the lake a little safer. The lake once drained north toward the Nile, until the Virunga volcanoes rose across its outlet and turned its flow around into the Congo. None of this is felt from the beach at Rubavu, the resort town at the north end under the Virungas, where people wade in off the palm-lined sand and the water is warm.\n\nAfter dusk the sambaza fishermen row out in triple canoes lashed together with long poles, hang lamps to draw the small silver fish up from the dark, and sing call-and-response across the water until the night's catch comes in, and boats take visitors out with them. Wooden boats and launches cross to the forested islets, some ringed by coffee terraces, and the road along the shore between Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi is the Congo Nile Trail, walked or cycled over several days through banana groves and coffee villages above the water. From the track up the Rubona headland near Rubavu the lake opens wide, the canoes strung along the water, the town's roofs below and the green ridgelines running toward the Congo shore, with the volcanoes behind.
