The eruption that made it, about 74,000 years ago, was the largest on Earth in the last two million years, and one idea holds that its ash darkened skies worldwide and cut early humans down to a few thousand survivors, a genetic bottleneck that scientists still argue over; the caldera walls stand 500 metres above the water on every side, and the island, Samosir, is the caldera's own floor, slowly heaved back up by the pressure of magma still moving beneath it. A ferry from Parapat crosses to the island in an hour with the walls sliding past, and the water, five hundred metres deep, is warm enough to swim in from a jetty or a quiet cove.\n\nThe Batak are the reason to stay. Their traditional houses carry saddle-shaped roofs that sweep up at both ends like a ship's prow, timber joined without a nail and set on bare stone footings, and in the villages of Tomok and Ambarita the stone sarcophagi of Batak royal families stand between the houses, with a ring of stone chairs at Ambarita where the village council once judged and, the guides say, executed. The island is circled by scooter in a day, past hot springs, churches and rice fields, and the villages around Tuk Tuk keep guesthouses on the shore. In the first hour of light there is no wind, and a small boat on the water finds a perfect upside-down copy of the caldera rim on the surface; in June and July the haze thins and the far wall, thirty kilometres away, stands sharp across the water, and from the viewpoints on the rim the scale finally lands.
