The mountain is a monument before it is a view. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries people who had escaped slavery, the maroons, hid in its caves and on its ledges, using the cliffs as a fortress; oral tradition holds that on 1 February 1835, when a police party climbed toward their hideouts, the maroons threw themselves from the summit rather than be taken, not knowing that slavery had just been abolished. A steep forest path climbs the monolith to a memorial and to the ledges where they lived, with the lagoon spread out below in bands of turquoise and the reef beyond. The mountain stands for enslaved people brought from the African mainland, Madagascar, India and Southeast Asia, and it is a World Heritage Site for that reason.\n\nThe lagoon is the day. You wade into shallow, bath-warm water sheltered by the reef, with coconut palms behind and the monolith overhead, and out on the flat water the kitesurfers ride the steady winter wind from May to October. Off the tip of the peninsula the sand on the shelf appears, from the air, to pour over the edge into deep blue like a waterfall on the seabed, an illusion of sand and currents best seen from a short helicopter loop. At Chamarel, in the hills behind, boardwalks circle bare dunes rippling in red, brown, violet and green, bands of volcanic earth that settled into place over two million years and hold their stripes even after rain; the dunes have been fenced off since the 1960s because footsteps blur them.
