The staircase is Reinebringen, laid up the mountain by Nepalese Sherpas, 1,978 steps to a ridge at 448 metres where the village, the bridges, the islets and the fjord lie in one sweep with the peaks running off down the island chain; it takes an hour up and is the most-walked path in Lofoten. The cabins are rorbuer, the huts the winter fishermen slept in when the cod came, and they are rented now with the water under the floor and the boats going past the window. Along the shore stand wooden racks hung with skrei, Arctic cod, drying in the cold spring air into stockfish, a trade Lofoten has run for a thousand years and the reason the village exists.\n\nAbove the Arctic Circle the light swings between extremes and the fjord doubles whatever the sky is doing: in summer the midnight sun circles behind the peaks and lights the water through the night, and from September, on dark clear nights, the aurora ripples over Reinefjorden and reflects in its still surface. Kayaks glide across the glassy water into coves at the foot of the mountains where the only sounds are the paddle and seabirds echoing off the rock. Across the bridges lies the islet of Sakrisøy, where the stilt houses are painted ochre-yellow instead of red, and off the southern tip of the island churns the Moskstraumen, one of the most powerful tidal whirlpools on Earth and the original maelstrom that gave every other its name. In December 1941 German forces burned part of Reine as a reprisal for a British commando raid on the islands, and the village was rebuilt.
