The Incas built it around 1450 and left it within a century, and it stood in the cloud forest, overgrown but intact, until the outside world learned of it in 1911. What makes it unlike any ruin is that it is whole: the temples, houses, stairways and terraces stand as they were laid, and the walls are dry-stone, granite blocks shaped to interlock without mortar so tightly that a knife will not go between them, and in an earthquake the stones shift and settle rather than crack. Sixteen fountains run in sequence down through the town, still fed by a channel 749 metres long that the Incas cut from a spring on the mountainside. On the highest terrace a carved granite pillar, the Intihuatana, the sun's hitching post, throws a shadow that swings from long to short across the year.\n\nThe classic way in is the Inca Trail, four days on the original stone road over high passes and through cloud forest, past smaller Inca sites the trains never reach, arriving through the Sun Gate at dawn with the town below. From the terraced Guardhouse on the upper circuit the whole site lines up with the green cone of Huayna Picchu rising behind it, the angle behind nearly every image of the place; Huayna Picchu itself is a separate ticket, climbed on Inca stairs cut into the rock to a temple on top.
