The valley runs east from the Indus below the Stok range, a canyon of painted rock in red, purple and ochre with the Markha river filling the only flat ground, and the trail spends whole hours inside it, walls rising close on both sides, before opening onto villages of barley fields, poplars and whitewashed chortens. Crossings come in the morning, when the river is low; by afternoon the snowmelt has raised it, and the fords are knee-deep and cold. The villages are the beds. A homestay is a stone-walled house with a flat mud roof and doorframes low enough to duck under, and everything happens in the chansa, the kitchen that doubles as the family's living room, where you eat butter tea and thukpa by the stove with the family and sleep on the floor.\n\nAbove Markha village a tiny whitewashed temple, Techa, is glued to a cliff high over the valley, reached by a scramble, and it is kept by a single monk at a time, each sent up from the monastery at Hemis to live a solitary year before handing over. The valley is part of Hemis National Park, home to more snow leopards than any other protected area, and though the cats are almost never seen in summer, their tracks are on the trail and blue sheep stand on the cliffs above. The trek ends over the Kongmaru La, 5,260 metres of thin air and prayer-flag switchbacks, from which the whole Markha country and the ice of Kang Yatse open at once, and then the long descent through a gorge to the road.
