The canyon is in the lowlands of Colchis, and the greenery packed into the gorge is a relict: Colchic forest, a survivor of the ice ages that scoured similar woodland off the rest of Europe; the limestone squeezing in on both sides was laid down under a warm sea in the Cretaceous, and the shells and sea urchins of that sea are read in the walls. A paved trail of 700 metres follows the rim with the water far below, past the falls where side streams arrive over the canyon lip in drops of twelve to fifteen metres and land in a pool the colour of bottle glass, and then the Dadiani stair, thirty limestone steps cut for the princes of Mingrelia, who swam in the pool at the bottom, leads down to the water.\n\nBoarding is from the still pool at the walkway's end, where an oarsman takes the raft into the slot, and the walls close in overhead, the light goes green and the water is clear to the stones on the bottom; it is the reason most people come, and the ride is short. The water turns emerald only when the river is low, through August, its driest month, when the sediment settles and the rafts run most reliably; in March, the wettest month, the snowmelt of the Egrisi range turns the Abasha high and cloudy, the rim waterfalls run at full force and the boats are often pulled from the water. The canyon is an hour from Kutaisi.
