The classic outing is the cogwheel railway up to Gornergrat, at 3,089 metres, where the Matterhorn stands across the valley and the Gorner Glacier sweeps around the foot of Monte Rosa like a frozen sea; on the way up, a short walk from Rotenboden station, the small Riffelsee holds the peak upside down on a still morning. The other moment worth getting up for is dawn, when the first light touches only the summit and works down the pyramid from pink to fiery red while the valley is still dark.\n\nModern climbing was born on this mountain. Edward Whymper reached the summit from Zermatt on 14 July 1865 after seven failed attempts, and on the way down the rope snapped and four of his party fell to their deaths; the broken rope is in the Matterhorn Museum in the village, with the gear of the time. Three days later the Italian guide Jean-Antoine Carrel, who had been racing Whymper up the far ridge, reached the top from Italy. The rock they climbed came from another continent: the top thousand metres or so is African gneiss, shoved over European rock when the continents collided, so the summit of Switzerland's most famous mountain is a piece of Africa.
