The spheres are concretions, lime that gathered around a shell or a grain in the mud of the seabed sixty million years ago and hardened in a ball while the mud stayed soft, so that when the cliff erodes the balls fall out whole and lie on the sand until the sea breaks them; crouching beside one of the big boulders the surface resolves into a raised net of veins like the seams of a turtle's shell, where the mineral-filled cracks have outlasted the softer stone, and in a split one the cracks are filled in order, brown calcite first, then yellow spar, then rare dolomite and quartz. At the back of the beach the low mudstone bank shows the bulges of half-exposed spheres still locked in the rock that made them, a few already cracked open in place.\n\nAt low water the whole field opens and the beach is walked from the tight group near the path to the lone spheres far out on the wet sand, and as the sea comes back the water runs around each sphere and climbs it until the smaller ones are dark domes in the foam. When Walter Mantell sketched the beach in 1848 he drew far more spheres than stand here now, and noted that the smaller ones were already being carried away, so the beach is protected. In Kāi Tahu tradition the boulders are cargo washed ashore from the wrecked canoe Āraiteuru, the eel baskets and gourds of the ancestors.
