The plateau is the land of the Bunong, for whom an elephant is not livestock but a family member, named, inherited down the generations and mourned when it dies, and the elephant projects around the town of Sen Monorom take the animals out of work and into the forest, where the day is deliberately uneventful, walking behind them while they strip bark, throw dust over their backs and doze; Bou Sra falls in three steps thirty kilometres from town, and the middle one shakes the air, a broad curtain that lands hard enough to throw spray back up the gorge and hang a rainbow in it, running at full force in the late monsoon of September. From the ridge at Samot Cheur, Khmer for the forest sea, the name explains itself, canopy rolling to the horizon with no road, roof or field, and on cool mornings after the rains low cloud pools in the valleys under the rim and burns off after sunrise.\n\nThe forest below is the Keo Seima sanctuary, holding the largest population of black-shanked doucs, and the yellow-cheeked gibbons of Jahoo, the only habituated groups of their species anywhere, tracked by leaving the bamboo camp in the dark and waiting in the trees for the morning song. December and January mornings drop below twenty degrees, and the grass hills hold their deepest green as the monsoon tails off, fading to dry brown by March, when the burning starts.
