The chalk is the floor of a sea of seventy million years ago, pushed up and folded by the ice sheets that crossed here, and the cliffs still fall in slabs after wet winters; the Maglevandstrappen stair drops through the forest to a beach of pebbles and flint at the foot of the wall, where the chalk goes silent and sheer overhead and the water is milky green with dissolved lime, and the Queen's Throne, Dronningestolen, is the highest point, 128 metres of chalk falling away underfoot, named for the wife of a king who in the folklore lived inside the cliff. The peregrines nesting on the faces are the reason the species exists in Denmark at all.\n\nBehind the forest the chalk comes within a hand's depth of the surface, and the turf it feeds at Høvblege is too lime-rich and thin to farm, which is why 18 of Denmark's 45 wild orchid species survive here, several nowhere else in the country, opening from May, and why the last large blue butterflies in Denmark fly on the same grassland for a few weeks from late June, laying their eggs on the wild thyme and living out their larval life inside the nests of ants. After dark on the clifftop, with no town glow, the Milky Way stands high in the evening from August to November, while around midsummer the nights never go dark enough to show it.
