The mountain stands far from the trekking circuits, reached over gravel roads from the small town of Gobernador Gregores or from Cochrane on the Chilean side, and for most visitors it is not climbed but approached: trails thread the lenga forest of southern beech and the glacial streams toward its base, where the loudest sound is the wind, and the long walk up to the De Agostini base camp ends below the hanging glaciers of the east face, where the night is spent in freezing cold waiting for the dawn to light the wall. The climb itself is for experienced mountaineers, a serious and technical route through crevassed glaciers and granite towers, and the weather turns many parties back; the first ascent was in 1943 by Alberto María de Agostini, a Salesian priest who had spent decades mapping and photographing Patagonia and reached this summit at sixty.\n\nThe mountain has two names. Argentina calls it San Lorenzo, for the saint, and Chile calls it Cochrane, for the British admiral who commanded the Chilean navy in the war of independence, which is why the town and the lake on the Chilean side carry the name too. In the forests below shelters the huemul, the endangered Andean deer that stands on Chile's coat of arms, one of the rarest large mammals in South America, and it is seen more often here than almost anywhere, along with condors on the ridges and guanacos on the steppe. The landscape has none of the crowds of El Chaltén, four hundred kilometres south, and much of the same rock.
