The mountain is really two things: an old caldera, a wide bowl blown open by an eruption in 1257 so large that it chilled the whole planet, and inside it a turquoise crater lake, Segara Anak, with a young cone called Barujari rising from the water and still erupting every few years. For seven centuries nobody knew which volcano had caused the cold summers recorded around the world in the 1250s; the answer was traced to Rinjani only in 2013. The trek climbs from the village of Sembalun through grassland to the crater rim, where the tents go up on the edge with the ground falling away to the lake far below, and on clear dry-season nights the Milky Way stands over the caldera with no light to wash it out.\n\nThe summit push leaves the rim camp around two in the morning, up a ridge of loose volcanic sand where every two steps forward cost one back, so that you top out as the sun comes up; in the dry season the valleys below fill with cloud and the sunrise breaks over an unbroken sea of white, with Bali's Mount Agung to the west and the islands to the east. The other half of the trek goes down into the caldera. A steep path drops from the rim to the lake shore, where the Aik Kalak hot springs pool between the rocks and trekkers soak the descent out of their legs before climbing out the far side.
