So you do not go to Nanda Devi; you go to see it. The twin summits stand above the forests of Auli, reached by road from Joshimath, where pine and oak ridges open onto the massif and the three points of Trishul beside it, and the best of it lasts a few minutes: well before the valleys brighten, the first sun touches the very top and works slowly down the snow, orange, then pink, then plain white. From October, once the monsoon lifts, the air is the clearest of the year and the summits stand hard against the sky at dawn before valley cloud builds by noon. In winter the meadows above Auli fill with snow and the ski slopes open under a cloudless mountain.\n\nThe ring around the mountain is what makes it strange. Its walls rise above 6,000 metres almost everywhere, and the only way through is a gorge so narrow that the inner sanctuary was not entered by outsiders until 1934; two years later two climbers reached the summit, and for fourteen years nobody on Earth had stood higher, until Annapurna was climbed in 1950. In 1965 a joint American and Indian intelligence team carried a plutonium-powered listening device high onto the mountain to track Chinese missile tests, abandoned it in a storm, and never found it again; it is still up there somewhere in the ice. The one walking route left into the park's outer zone starts at Lata, a village 25 kilometres up the valley from Joshimath, and climbs to Lata Kharak and the Dharansi Pass. To the villages below, the mountain is a goddess, a daughter of the hills, and once every twelve years they carry her image on foot for weeks through the high country in a procession called the Nanda Raj Jat.
